Veterans in America: A Conversation with VA Secretary David Shulkin
On Thursday, November 9, 2017 -- a day before the nation observes Veterans Day -- The Washington Post hosted U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin for a wide-ranging conversation about the most critical issues affecting America’s 22 million veterans and their families.
The discussion included his department’s efforts to curb the veterans' suicide rate, address post-traumatic stress disorder and other health concerns. The secretary will also talk about challenges facing those transitioning from military to civilian life, including workforce training and housing.
Shulkin, a board-certified internist and the former chief executive of several major hospitals and health systems, served as the VA’s Under Secretary for Health for 18 months before being unanimously confirmed by the Senate on February 13, 2017 as the nation’s ninth Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
