There are 49 million Americans who are food insecure. Feeding America, which is the umbrella for food banks in the country, has been feeding about 37 million of those, about one in eight Americans. It’s even more dramatic when you look at some populations. For example, we serve approximately one in three African American children and almost one in three Latino children.

One of the tricky things in the United States is for people to understand that you can be both overweight and undernourished, and that we have both phenomena going on.

I think we need to have a very robust conversation about how we ended up this way and how we could make it be different.
