Announcement from Senior Director of Audience Ryan Kellett and Social and Operations Director Mark Smith:

We are thrilled to announce that María Sánchez Díez is joining The Post as an operations editor in Local.

María is a dynamic newsroom leader with expertise in digital strategy, workflows and experimental story forms.

In Local, María will partner with the section’s editors and reporters on new digital strategies, offer reports on the section’s analytics and work to build new experiences for readers of Local’s nationally focused beats, including transportation, religion and education.

Most recently, María was a partner manager for ProPublica’s Electionland, a collaborative journalism project that tracked and reported on problems that prevented voters from casting ballots in the 2018 election. On that project, she recruited local news organizations and coordinated engagement strategies aimed at reaching Spanish-speaking audiences, including the creation of a WhatsApp bot.

Before her time at ProPublica, María was the editor of emerging news products at Univision. There, she edited general assignment stories, including immigration coverage, and launched new storytelling formats in partnership with engineering and product. She has also managed the creation of Chrome browser notifications, a Facebook bot for soccer fans and a text-messaging platform that offered fact checks during the 2016 presidential campaign.

María was also the digital editor-in-chief of Condé Nast Traveler Spain before her move to the United States.

María was a Fulbright Scholar at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at City University of New York, where she earned a masters degree in entrepreneurial journalism. She also has a bachelors in journalism from Universidad Carlos III in Madrid.

Shefali Kulkarni, who has been sharing operations editor duties in Local and Financial, will shift to focus solely on support of the Financial section.

María’s first day is March 25. Please join us in welcoming her to The Post.
