Announcement from Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt and Design Director Greg Manifold:

We are delighted to announce that Chris Rukan will be joining the Opinions section as an art director.

In this newly created role, we expect Chris to push our opinions journalism to new visual heights across all platforms. He will work both on quick turnaround pieces and ambitious enterprise. A foretaste of what we can expect can be seen in Chris’s phenomenal work for our first Opinions Essay, “The Strongmen Strike Back,” which we published online Friday and in print on Sunday. Chris will report to Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt, but will continue to work closely with the Design Department. He’ll have a growing digital toolbox of templates and modules at his disposal, including our industry-leading work with Google’s AMP stories.

Chris has had tremendous success since joining The Post in 2006. In Sports, he worked tirelessly on major events and numerous special sections and was one of the section’s first digital designers. He also conceived, reported and designed hundreds of charts. In Outlook, he formed a strong rapport with the editors and a network of illustrators to keep the section at the forefront of visual storytelling. A prime example of this collaboration was for the death of George H.W. Bush — Chris commissioned a distinctive illustration more than a year in advance to pair with Carlos Lozada’s piece on Bush’s lack of memoir.

Chris’s work has routinely been recognized by the Society for News Design, which has given him multiple portfolio awards. He’s served as a judge for the organization’s print competition and was coordinator for the 2018 judging.

Chris began his career at the New Haven Register before moving to the Connecticut Post and the Journal News in Westchester County. He was an assistant sports editor at the Orlando Sentinel and sports design director for the Palm Beach Post before joining The Post.

A native of Milford, Conn., Chris is a diehard Red Sox fan. He and his wife Courtney, The Post’s Deputy Multiplatform Editor, recently moved to Bowie. They love trivia, loud rock shows, baseball and following the cubs of Appalachian Bear Rescue.
