Announcement from Opinions Operations Editor Becca Clemons and Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt:
We’re happy to announce that Zainab Mudallal is joining the Opinions section as an assistant editor on the digital operations team.
Zainab comes to us from Express, which she joined in June 2015 as a news editor, budgeting and editing the daily Nation and World section and weekly Fit section on health and wellness. She became digital editor in 2017, where she created and executed a digital strategy, produced and optimized stories, oversaw long-term digital projects, monitored and reported on traffic, improved workflows and ran the brand’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts. She successfully boosted engagement on social media and consistently shared best practices with the staff on boosting traffic. She also launched and moderated a successful live chat with the publication’s advice columnist and has collaborated across the newsroom to grow the Express audience. Throughout her time at Express, she carved out time to write about D.C.’s toughest workouts, puppies and contributed to the Trending and Weekend Pass sections.
Prior to Express, Zainab was an Atlantic Media fellow with Quartz, where she wrote the Daily Brief newsletter and reported general assignment stories. Zainab is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where she majored in multiplatform journalism and minored in Spanish. A native of Iraq, Zainab grew up in the Middle East and speaks Arabic. When she’s not trying to emulate her mother and grandmother’s recipes, she’s watching European soccer, boxing, exploring D.C. or — most likely — petting a dog.
Zainab starts in her new role on Monday, April 1.
