Announcement from Sports Editor Matt Vita and Deputy Sports Editor Matt Rennie:
We’re delighted to announce that Kent Babb has won first place for feature writing from the Associated Press Sports Editors for his profile of retired NBA star Kobe Bryant. In the piece, Kent deftly navigated a complex, troubling personal story for Bryant to produce a revealing portrait of the pro basketball Hall of Famer as he builds a new career as an artist.
This award is a testament to the exceptional quality of The Post Sports section’s work in 2018. The Post placed finalists in seven out of 11 writing, multimedia, video and photography categories in the annual APSE contest. In all, judges recognized 16 members of The Post staff for their work last year.
Kent will receive his plaque at this summer’s APSE convention in Atlanta.
