Announcement from General Assignment Editor Keith McMillan, Live News Editor Josh Freedom du Lac and Senior Director of Audience Ryan Kellett:

We are excited to announce that Brittany Shammas is joining the General Assignment news desk, where she’ll write breaking news and enterprise.

Brittany comes to The Post from the Miami New Times, where she's written long-form and investigative stories, as well as daily news, since 2016. Her most illuminating stories include an investigation of World Patent Marketing, which was accused of scamming thousands of hopeful inventors out of millions of dollars, and a profile of a gender-nonconforming 7-year-old, a boy who is proud to be a boy and enjoys so-called “girly things.”

She previously covered education for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, where she also wrote about how evidence disappeared or was withheld after a sheriff's deputy shot a man on his family's property. Brittany has also written about the Parkland and Pulse nightclub shootings.

Brittany is a West Michigan native and graduate of Michigan State. When she isn't writing, she enjoys the outdoors. She grew up water skiing, has climbed Pikes Peak, and once fell in during a whitewater rafting trip in Tennessee. You can ask her about the times she's gone python and shark hunting on assignment.

Her first day will be Sept. 9. Please join us in welcoming Brittany to the newsroom.
