Announcement from Executive Features Editor Liz Seymour and Deputy Features Editors Mitch Rubin and David Malitz:

We are pleased to announce that Emily Heil will be joining Food as a reporter covering national trends.

In this role, Emily will be spotting food angles in politics, pop culture, consumer news and social media, and turning them into stories showing that what we eat says something about who we are.

For almost six years, Emily, along with Helena Andrews-Dyer, has been writing the Reliable Source column. As a result, Emily has been to enough state dinners, red carpets and embassy parties to allow her to identify either a canape or a Cabinet member in a nanosecond.

She has written a series of Washington-centric columns, starting with the congressional gossip columns “Under the Dome” for the Hill newspaper and “Heard on the Hill” for Roll Call, where she also wrote political features. In 2011, she came to The Post to work with Al Kamen on his “In the Loop” column before moving to Style at the end of 2013 to take over the Reliable Source. She started her career covering Congress for the National Journal and for what is now called Bloomberg BNA.

Emily grew up in Onancock, Va., and got her start in journalism at the age of 16 writing for the Eastern Shore News. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 1999 with a degree in English. She and her husband, Eric Hoover, a reporter at the Chronicle of Higher Education, live on Capitol Hill.

Please join us in congratulating Emily on her new role.
