Announcement from General Assignment Editor Keith McMillan, Live News Editor Josh Freedom du Lac and Senior Director of Audience Ryan Kellett:

We are excited to announce that Derek Hawkins is returning to The Post to join the General Assignment desk, where he’ll cover breaking news and write enterprise while playing a crucial role in GA’s expansion into weekend evenings and overnights.

Derek first came to The Post in 2015, eventually joining Morning Mix for a year and a half, before launching The Cybersecurity 202 newsletter in 2018. He has covered a range of topics for a range of editors, including the trials of the officers charged in Freddie Gray’s death for Metro, the Dakota Access pipeline protests in North Dakota, wrote about overzealous drug enforcement in Washington for Investigative, reported on the world’s largest hacking conference for PowerPost and contributed to the Fatal Force project. While with Morning Mix, Derek specialized in stories about law, crime and politics, and also covered breaking news, including the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

When Derek isn’t reporting, he is an obsessive collector of records and musical instruments. He also describes himself as a devoted cat dad and a mediocre chess player.

His first day will be Sept. 30. Please join us in welcoming Derek back to the newsroom.
