The Washington Post’s Monica Ulmanu, Ann Gerhart, Olivier Laurent, Sarah Kaplan, John Muyskens, Chris Alcantara, and Andrew Freedman (now with Axios) have been awarded the 2021 Innovative Storytelling award by the National Press Foundation for their animated reconstruction of how climate change fueled the fire that devastated Berry Creek, Calif.

The judges wrote that the “tools, technology, visualizations and videos were presented seamlessly in ways that simplified a complex story and made it more compelling.”

The Innovative Storytelling Award is presented to news organizations exemplifying originality and creativity in digital journalism. The award will be presented at the National Press Foundation’s annual awards dinner on February 9.
