Post Photo wins top awards from Pictures of the Year International and Northern Short Course contests

The Post gained more than 20 recognitions for a range of work including visual editing and photojournalistic coverage of issues such as the war in Ukraine and the opioid crisis.

The Washington Post won numerous awards in the Pictures of the Year International (POYi) and the Northern Short Course contests for visual journalism produced in 2022. The full list of prizes is below, prefaced by some highlights:

The Photo team won the POYi Angus McDougall Overall Excellence in Editing award, recognizing the best editing by a media organization’s visual reporting teams across all platforms. Senior Photo Assignment Editor Olivier Laurent was named Visual Editor of the Year by POYi, and Deputy Director of Photography Robert Miller won first place for Newspaper Photo Editing in the same competition.

Salwan Georges was named Photographer of the Year in the Northern Short Course contests.
