Hi! I’m Sofia Andrade, a writer born and raised in Miami with roots in Ecuador. I was recently arts chair of the Harvard Crimson, where I, along with a fabulous group of editors, oversaw the publication of hundreds of articles, from coverage of the Cannes Film Festival (which I attended in 2021) to sharp reviews of the best concerts around. I love writing about all things culture, so I’m thrilled to be joining the Features team at The Post this summer! I’m most drawn to stories at the intersections of culture, politics and identity, and I can’t wait to dive in. I’ve previously worked at Slate, the Miami Herald (and its Spanish-language counterpart) and the Nation, and I’ve freelanced elsewhere. I spent this past semester abroad in Madrid.

Hello! My name is Shera, and I’m so excited to join the General Assignment desk this summer. I’m a doctoral student in history at the University of Oxford, where I started studying as a Rhodes Scholar in 2021. Before that, I was an undergrad at Harvard and the managing editor of its student newspaper, the Crimson. In past years, I’ve been lucky to intern at the Daily Memphian in Tennessee, Bloomberg News, CBS and the American Prospect — all places where I got to do what I love most: listen to people share their view of the world as it changes around them.

In my free time, I like making soup, barraging people close to me with article links and reading short stories. Last summer, I discovered a love for boxing, which I hope will prove as useful in the D.C. heat as it did in Memphis.

Hey! My name is Damon Brooks Jr., and I am a senior at the University of Maryland. I happily found journalism during the worst time of my life, motivating me daily. In 2012, I was involved in an altercation that left me paralyzed from the waist down. Prior to my paralysis, I played basketball at Goucher College in Baltimore. I couldn’t talk or eat for 27 days, which dampened my spirits severely. Through my sleepless nights in the ICU, I thought about what my life would be like without basketball because I’ve found so much solace in the sport. Once I got to my inpatient rehabilitation facility, I still struggled with the harsh reality that basketball was a distant memory. An employee suggested that I write my feelings and observations into my iPod touch. I took his advice to heart and began jotting my thoughts down. I fell in love with using words to describe what I feel and see. I follow the NBA playoffs religiously, and in 2012 LeBron James was seeking his first NBA title with the Miami Heat. I saw a loud and vibrant personality in Stephen A. Smith. I had my nurse Sharon look up his profession, and I learned he was a journalist. From that point on, I knew that I would return to school to become a journalist. My goal is to become a great sports journalist while inspiring others never to give up when experiencing a tragedy.

Hey, it’s Chris from Taiwan. This May, I’ll graduate from the Graduate School of Journalism at UC-Berkeley. Growing up on a small island, I craved adventure and wanted to pursue a career that could bridge people with different ideologies and backgrounds. My goal in journalism has always been bringing great stories beyond the news industry; for me, videos are the ultimate medium. During my study, I’ve worked for “American Experience” from PBS and the San Francisco Standard as a video intern, shooting, producing and animating videos for their digital platforms.

This summer in D.C., I want to bring all my creative and investigative capacity to The Post’s Video team while giving my Gen-Z cohort the wit and kindness from the previous generation.

Hi! I am a sports journalist and recent grad of the master’s in journalism program at the University of Maryland. Sports have always been my passion, and this love has only intensified as I continue to grow as a writer. I enjoy finding captivating, creative and nuanced ways to tell stories, both on and off the field. I am also interested in the intersection of sports and society, along with learning to integrate data into my storytelling. When I am not writing or doing schoolwork, I am usually playing basketball, playing video games or watching sports. Long term, my goal is to become a consistent voice in the sports media landscape. I look forward to continuing my growth as a journalist this summer!

I’m a junior at UC-Berkeley studying data science. Out of high school, I took a job taking out “ums” and “errs” from interview tape. This led to interning at a handful of independent podcasts, making stories at the Daily Californian, and then jumping into a world of rigorous audio journalism/craziness at Radiolab. That’s when everything exploded: I learned about sound design, story arcs, the art of interviewing, researching, pitching and that “ums” and “errs” can actually be valuable. But most importantly, I learned that I find this work very fulfilling and am very excited to explore it more at The Post. Other than that, I like to run, climb (badly) and walk around cities. I’m also enthusiastic about bread and nut butters.

I’m a photographer and designer from Indiana, studying journalism and Asian American studies at Northwestern. I love taking film photos of my friends and designing physical projects like zines — and especially love when I can combine both with my interest in ethnic studies and identity. I’m working on a personal photography series exploring how Gen-Z Asian Americans digitally negotiate identities of race, sexuality and gender via the internet. I love Wong Kar Wai movies and Omar Apollo. I daydream about living in Taipei one day!

Hey, everyone! My name is Minh, and I am a graduate student at the Missouri School of Journalism. I originally planned to attend engineering school but fell in love with photojournalism during my final days of high school. I am still capturing moments almost seven years later, with no regrets whatsoever. Fun fact: Until recently, I hadn’t owned a working digital camera in four years. I’ve been mooching off of equipment privileges from my time at the Columbia Missourian, Evansville Courier &amp; Press and the Buffalo News. If you don’t see me behind a camera, I’ll probably be watching/playing soccer or trying a new food. My time as a photojournalism student has made me appreciate community and life, and I hope to convey that in my work this summer as a Washington Post photo intern.

Hi! My name is Corinne Dorsey, a graduated journalism major from Howard University. At Howard, I was the president of Howard’s Her Campus Magazine and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. I have previously interned at the “Today” show at NBC News, the Dallas Morning News, CNN’s D.C. bureau and the Wall Street Journal under WSJ Magazine. I was also a 2022 White House Correspondents’ Association scholar. Outside of reporting, I enjoy traveling, practicing yoga, watching movies and cooking new dishes!

Hi! My name is Greta Forslund, and I am a senior at Arizona State University. I’ve spent my life in two of the wettest and driest climates in the U.S. — Olympia, Wash., and Phoenix. At ASU, I am executive editor of our student-run news organization, the State Press. When I’m not in the newsroom coming up with icebreakers and settling style debates, you can find me teaching friends how to play the card game Wizard, fishing, journaling and substantiating most Pacific Northwest stereotypes (except for loving coffee). I’ve interned at the Arizona Republic, Arizona Capitol Times and Wenatchee World, and am thrilled to be heading to D.C. this summer to work with the WaPo team.

Hello! My name is Tamia Fowlkes. I am a graduate student at Columbia University. In 2022, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a B.A. in journalism and political science. I am excited to join the team at The Post this summer! My passion for journalism stems from a desire to explore stories at the intersection of race, politics, activism and the arts. I hope to write pieces that evoke positive change. I have interned for the USA Today Network, “The Rachel Maddow Show,” Blavity, the Wisconsin State Journal and Isthmus. One of my favorite pieces I have worked on is a 2021 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel investigation on deadly electrical fires in 53206, a predominantly Black Zip code in Milwaukee. In my free time, I love to explore museums, see plays and musicals, revisit old Disney Channel classics (á la “High School Musical”) and spend time with my family.

Hi, everyone! My name is Zoe Glasser, and I recently graduated with a B.S. in magazine journalism from Syracuse University. To distract myself from the freezing temperatures, I wrote and edited for SU’s premiere student-run magazine, Jerk Magazine. I had the honor of being editor in chief of Jerk this past year, where I spearheaded the creation of an issue that shared diverse stories from the LGBTQIA+ community. On the way to The Washington Post, I spent summers at Hawaii’s CBS/NBC affiliate station and SiriusXM.

Outside of writing, I also love collecting vinyl records and CDs, learning random trivia and listening to music from all over the world. Bonus points when those things come together — ask me about the history of the international emo subculture. My family now lives in Honolulu, but I grew up in Northern Virginia, so I’m thrilled to return to the DMV!

Hi! My name is Jasmine, and I am a writer from Chicago (a.k.a. the greatest city in the world). My passion for writing erupted from the pages of the many fiction books I read as a child; I wanted badly to create stories of my own, so I began crafting mystical tales between the lines of my fuzzy hot-pink notebook. Now, I am a rising senior at Harvard and a writer for the Harvard Crimson, where I edited op-eds this past year. I believe my calling is to serve the city that shaped me — my South Side community gives me purpose and it is my goal to ensure their voices never go unheard.

At school, I study social studies and Arabic. Away from the pen, I enjoy singing, listening to music (soul and neo-soul are my favorite genres), and fanatically analyzing the game strategies of players in “Big Brother.”

¡Hola a todos! My name is Claudia Hernández (she/her), and I am thrilled to join The Washington Post as a summer photo editing intern. I was born and raised in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and later did my bachelor’s in multimedia journalism and digital media production right across the border at the University of Texas at El Paso. Things took a wild turn when I moved to New York City to pursue an MFA in photography at Brooklyn College, a life-changing experience from which I’ll be graduating this spring. As someone who has experienced the border firsthand, I enjoy my job as a reporter for Borderless Magazine, where I write about immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border with a focus on LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. I love listening to the old Mexican ballads my grandma used to listen to, but I also am one of the lucky ones who got tickets for Taylor Swift.

Hi! I’m Grant Johnson, and I’ll be interning on the multiplatform desk at The Post through the Dow Jones News Fund. I’m a rising senior at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., double majoring in journalism and in writing, rhetoric and technical communication with a minor in sport communications. Well, actually, I like to say I major in the Breeze, JMU’s student-run newspaper, as its editor in chief. The Breeze’s newsroom is where I’ve spent the bulk of my time at JMU — for better or for worse — and where I’ve discovered more about what makes me tick, how to work with others and how to make tough decisions than anywhere else could’ve taught me.

I grew up 25 miles west of D.C. in Centreville, Va. Suffice to say, I’m humbled to intern for the newspaper that arrives at the foot of my parent’s driveway every morning.

If I’m not actively doing journalism or hyper-obsessing over it, I’m probably meal prepping or watching the Denver Broncos’ perpetually inept offense. So if anyone has leads on where to find the best bell peppers in the District or how to fix Russell Wilson, hit me up. Especially the latter. Please.

Hello! I’m Fiza, a journalism and government senior at the University of Texas where I ignore my degree plan to take every Asian American studies class available. I’m Kerala born, Pennsylvania raised and Texas cultured. I’m a proud AAJA member and the biggest fan of the Daily Texan, the student paper that shaped me into the writer and editor I am today. I’m grateful to have led the newsroom for a term. Along the way, I interned at the Austin American-Statesman and conducted research at the Center for Media Engagement, which scratched my itch for curiosity and developed my ongoing love for data journalism. I’ve been obsessed with The Post since I was a kid (back when I thought it covered the state of Washington) and I’m excited to learn from the staff and my fellow interns. Hook 'em and go 'stros!

Hello, my name is Samantha Latson! I am a recent graduate from the journalism master’s program at Indiana University. I am a lover of both writing and journalism. My goal is merely to impact lives through my pen. Embarking on the stories of 51 mostly African American women murdered in my hometown of Chicago was the catalyst to finding my passion for investigative reporting. Covering that story also revealed my reason for wanting to do journalism: to evoke change. Working on the “Unforgotten 51” project touched the lives of those who lost loved ones. Our work also inspired the Cook County Sheriff’s Office to create a task force for missing women and girls, mostly African American.

Aside from reporting, I am a movie connoisseur. When I am not working, one can find me eating tacos and watching movies. My favorite movie is “Forrest Gump.” In fact, I live by my favorite Gump quote, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.”

Hi! My name is Mary Claire Molloy, and I’m a recent graduate of Indiana University at Bloomington. My first brush with journalism was writing obituaries for child gun violence victims during high school for a project called “Since Parkland.” In between summers interning at USA Today and the Tampa Bay Times, I published several award-winning stories, including a campus sexual assault investigation. I have freelanced for The Post since 2021, covering vaccine distribution, abortion and the FedEx mass shooting in my hometown of Indianapolis. In my free time, I like to make playlists and amazing chocolate chip cookies (Irish butter is the secret sauce).

Growing up in vibrant Silver Spring, Md., — only minutes away from Washington, D.C. — taught me a lot about how communities are shaped by history, place and power. The stories of these intersections, along with my own Filipina American identity, are what I’m most drawn to, both with my pen and my camera. At the National Museum of American History, I helped produce virtual educational programming on undocumented community organizing. Nowadays, I’m the video editor for the Diamondback, where I’ve produced features on Black hair salons and contributed reporting on political protests and arts events. I’m finishing up my degree in journalism with a minor in Asian American studies at the University of Maryland. Outside of the newsroom, I enjoy going on hikes, baking bread and waiting for the next Criterion Collection flash sale.

I’m a senior at Columbia University studying philosophy and statistics, and I’m thrilled to return to The Post’s Data team as an intern this summer. I’ve spent the past year serving as the editor in chief of the Columbia Daily Spectator, after covering the epic highs and lows of Columbia sports. I also reported for the Austin Chronicle, my hometown alt-weekly, on the trials of public education in a pandemic. Last summer, I was a Dow Jones News Fund intern with the Investigative Reporting Workshop, and I worked with the sports and data teams at The Post to investigate the experiences of Black coaches in the NFL. This summer, I can’t wait to pursue accountability and build community through data analysis. Outside of journalism, I hope to catch as many baseball games as possible and learn the ins and outs of the D.C. coffee scene — recommendations are very welcome!

I am a data journalist based in Prince George’s County, Md. As a 2022 Post intern, I worked on election coverage with the data and politics teams. As an intern at ProPublica in 2021, I contributed to its investigation of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana. My reporting has appeared on NPR’s “Planet Money,” the Baltimore Banner, the Baltimore Sun and Strikewave.

Hello! My name is Brooke Park, and I recently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Before my senior year of college, I had never gone out of the country or been on an airplane. So, in a massive overcompensation, I decided to study abroad in South Korea my last semester and give myself only a weekend to get from Seoul to D.C.

I have worked at newspapers in almost every big city in Texas, where I fell in love with getting people who shouldn’t talk to me to talk. At the Texas Tribune and Texas Monthly, I reported on the misinformation campaigns allowing book ban controversies to take over public and school libraries in the state.

When I am not reading, writing and doing other classically journalism-y things, I can be found thrifting, attacking my cat with love or dancing to Tierra Whack, Remi Wolf or Audrey Nuna.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

I was born and raised in Miami, where I grew up writing short stories and poetry as a way to make sense of all the questions in my head that I — nor my ever-so-patient family — couldn’t quite answer. Years later, as editor in chief of Miami Dade College’s student newspaper, the Reporter, I realized journalism was a vessel for answering many of those questions, while also understanding and highlighting the stories of so many different communities. I transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was hired as editorial managing editor of the Daily Tar Heel. I’ve been able to work with the Texas Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, the Assembly NC, and WUNC, an NPR-affiliated station in Chapel Hill.

Outside of journalism, I’m madly in love with Bad Bunny (Hola, Benito &lt;3), and love to discuss music, movies and books that tear my psyche into pieces. I enjoy cooking and baking recipes; my favorite thing to cook would be Gallo pinto and cinnamon rolls. I also love to buy things: earrings, rings, shoes, clothes — really anything that fuels my ego and drains my bank account. I’m excited to do all of this — and work on the Metro section — this summer at The Post!

Hello! I am so excited to join the foreign desk as a Military Veterans in Journalism fellow.

I graduated and commissioned as an Army engineer officer from the United States Military Academy at West Point. While in the Army, I helped integrate some of the first female enlisted combat engineers before deploying to Syria and Kuwait. While deployed, I met some of the most incredible people whose stories and resilience inspired me to pursue journalism.

Now, I’m finishing my masters in journalism at the University of Maryland. Last summer, I interned at the Detroit Free Press covering breaking news, and this year I covered the Pentagon for Capital News Service.

I spend all of my free time traveling, planning future travels and snuggling with my 90-pound rescue lap dog, Mr. Biggs.

Hello! I’m Kate, a junior studying philosophy at Stanford. I’m thrilled to be reporting on the climate and environment for The Post. I grew up in Massachusetts, and I got my start in journalism covering high school sports for my hometown paper, the Harvard Press. I caught the bug for climate journalism in college during a gap year I spent reporting from San Francisco for Mission Local and the Mercury News. I continued that work last summer as an intern for the Boston Globe, where I split my time between the metro desk and the climate team. This spring, I was a climate reporting intern for the San Francisco Chronicle. Along the way, I served as editor in chief of the Stanford Daily. Outside of journalism, you can find me reading contemporary fiction, taking care of my plants and trying to find the best iced mocha in the city.

Hello! My name is Aquil Kenyatta Starks Jr. I am a recent graduate of Howard University in journalism and business administration. Raised in Philadelphia, journalism was always in my household thanks to my grandmother’s love for Rick Williams on 6ABC News. My time at Howard University has given me the opportunity to work for The Washington Post last fall as a news desk intern, a reporting fellow for the Pulitzer Prize and a 2021 Facebook social video intern. I am ecstatic to be coming back to work alongside the curation team!

Fun fact: Outside of journalism, I am training to one day enter in an “Open To All” (OTA) virgin vogue performance for ballroom dancing.

My name is Eli Tan, and I’m a graduate student at Columbia Journalism School. Before Columbia, I worked as a staff writer for CoinDesk in New York City, covering the strange world of cryptocurrency with a focus on Web3 and NFTs.

I grew up in South Seattle, where I spent my summers working as an artisan doughnut maker and biking around Lake Washington. I discovered my love for journalism in rural Minnesota while attending St. Olaf College, where I studied English and served as the sports editor of the school newspaper, the Olaf Messenger. I was also an infielder on the baseball team and hit one career home run, which is my greatest achievement. I’m excited to join The Post’s Business desk this summer and live in D.C. for the first time!

I’m Carson, a recent graduate of Indiana University and a proud news nerd. My path to digital design and graphics was long and winding, with stops in news reporting, feature writing, print design, illustration and photography. I did all this mostly at my college newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student, but I also interned at Indianapolis Monthly, Chalkbeat Indiana and, last summer, The Washington Post. I’m excited to learn more from the insanely cool, talented and kind Post staff. When I’m not working, I love watching sunsets, finding an Irish pub in every city I go to, cooking from scratch, saying hi to most dogs, reading novels and rock climbing.

I got lucky to find my way to journalism. Through a random internet search during my sophomore year of high school, I found the perfect journalism summer program, but I had to wait a year to apply. With no pen and paper in hand (rookie mistake), and on a computer that was logged in with generic credentials, I just thought, “I will remember to apply next year.”

From the fortuitous introduction of this story, you might have already figured I didn’t remember or search for the website ever again, but as if I was destined to attend it, I found it right on time to submit my application and be selected in my junior year. Fast forward to today, I have never stopped feeling lucky. My work and efforts have always seemed to be accompanied by a final touch of magic, as I choose to call it, that brings everything together. I’m extremely excited about this next step and to have the luck to meet everyone in the newsroom this summer.

Hi! I’m Hanna, a graduating senior from the University of Maryland with degrees in journalism and information science. By meshing these two worlds together, I’ve found a home in data and graphics journalism. I create helpful tools for fellow reporters using a variety of programming languages at the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism. I also lay out special print editions at the Diamondback and report on arts and culture. I’m a not-so-former backstage theater kid, and I still work as a theatrical lighting technician at the performing arts center on campus (ask me about your favorite musical!). In my free time, you can find me hiking local trails, making a new Spotify playlist or finding the next food spot I want to try. I’m excited to create and learn this summer at The Post!
