Announcement from National Editor Cameron Barr, Deputy National Editor Anne Kornblut, National Security Editor Peter Finn and Deputy National Security Editor Jason Ukman:

We are very pleased to announce that Dan Lamothe, an award-winning military reporter, war correspondent and blogger, will join The Washington Post’s national security team to start a military-focused blog.

Dan has reported on the war in Afghanistan extensively from both the war zone and Washington, covered U.S. Navy operations while underway at sea, and reported from Norway, Spain, Germany, and the Republic of Georgia, among other locations. A native of Chicopee, Mass., he is a graduate of journalism schools at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and the University of Maryland-College Park. Dan comes to The Post from Foreign Policy, where he broke several exclusives by obtaining documents through the Freedom of Information Act. Before that he spent nearly six years with the independent Military Times newspaper chain.

Dan has blogged extensively in the past, launching MassLive.com‘s Red Sox Monster baseball blog in 2007 and bringing it to national prominence. He cultivated a loyal readership on the Marine Corps Times blog, Battle Rattle.

His first day will be May 19. Please join us in welcoming him to The Post.
