Announcement from Matt Vita and Matt Rennie:
We are very happy to announce that Jorge Castillo will be joining the Post as our new Washington Wizards beat writer. Jorge has spent the past four years covering NFL, MLB and NBA teams in the highly competitive New York market. He’s currently the Yankees beat reporter for the Newark Star-Ledger. Before that he covered the Giants for the Star-Ledger, including their run to the Super Bowl XLVI championship. He’s also written about the New York Knicks and New Jersey (now Brooklyn) Nets and the NBA draft. In his work on the Yankees and Giants, Jorge juggled the many demands of a pro beat – the daily articles, analyses, game stories and blog posts – and still found time to produce deeply reported enterprise such as a revealing 2012 piece on the growing number of NFL players testing positive for use of Adderall.
This is a homecoming of sorts for Jorge, who had a successful internship with the Post in the summer of 2010 when he wrote stories on the Redskins, Mystics, Nationals, Capitals and D.C. United. He also chronicled the signing by the Golden State Warriors of a relatively unknown guard out of Harvard named Jeremy Lin. After graduating from Yale the following spring, Jorge spent six months as a sports intern at the New York Times, covering topics ranging from high school athletes to professional teams. Jorge is fluent in Spanish and speaks some Portuguese as well. The Spanish certainly has helped him in the Yankees clubhouse and may be of use with the Wizards if they ever sign Ricky Rubio or Pau Gasol; more immediately, we fully expect his Portuguese will help us shed new light on why Nene is so injury-prone.
Jorge’s first day with us is Monday, and we can’t wait for him to get started.
