The Post to offer unlimited, free access on Election Day

The Washington Post will offer an unprecedented level of coverage on Election Day, providing readers with a variety of ways to access Post journalism and keep up with the day’s news and results. Live web programming, an election night watch party, and real-time updates for nearly 500 races across the country will complement expert reporting and analysis from The Post’s newsroom, ensuring readers can interact with the latest Post content however they choose. The Post will also offer unlimited, free access to its content starting at 12:01 a.m. ET November 8 until the morning after the election.

“Our goal in every election is to reveal everything we can about the candidates for the benefit of our readers. Over the last two years, our politics staff has excelled at this, using a range of storytelling tools to bring readers on the trail, shed light on the issues at stake, and offer insight into how each party’s nominee might lead the country,” said Steven Ginsberg, senior politics editor at The Post. “This effort culminates on what will likely be one of the most closely watched election days in recent memory and we are devoting an extraordinary amount of resources to ensuring our readers stay informed throughout the day and as results come in.”

The Post is bolstering its election night coverage with five hours of live, original programming, which will be extended if necessary until the presidential race is called, from The Post’s Washington, D.C. newsroom beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET. Hosted by political reporters Ed O’Keefe and Elise Viebeck, the live show will feature updates and commentary from nearly a dozen Post reporters and columnists throughout the evening, analysis of real-time election returns and results from The Fix’s Chris Cillizza, on-camera reports from journalists at the Trump and Clinton campaign headquarters, and remote interviews from the floor of The Post’s election night watch party, which will feature panel discussions with newsmakers, elected officials and Post columnists. This will be streamed live on The Post’s site, its national news app, and Facebook.

“This is the most ambitious election night live broadcast undertaken by a publisher and it builds off of the success of our record-breaking debate night programming,” said Micah Gelman, director of video at The Post. “This programming brings to life the incomparable work of The Post’s politics team and allows readers to interact with journalists in a more personal way.”

For the first time, The Post will host an election night watch party at its D.C. headquarters. The invite-only event will feature multiple screens to watch results come in as well as custom cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from restaurants debuting at the MGM National Harbor in December.

Readers can also expect:

  • Coverage of nearly 500 races nationwide: Using The Post’s artificial intelligence system, Heliograf, readers can get stories that include real-time results, reporting and analysis on 435 House, 34 Senate, and 12 gubernatorial races across the country. Updates will appear on The Post’s liveblog.
  • World-class journalism: Readers can expect contributions from seasoned political reporters including Dan Balz, Karen Tumulty, Robert Costa, Philip Rucker, Matea Gold and Dave Weigel, as well as insight from those who have been traveling with the candidates, including Jenna Johnson, Anne Gearan, Abby Phillip, John Wagner, Sean Sullivan and Jose DelReal. Post opinion staff, including Greg Sargent, Jennifer Rubin, Erik Wemple, Dana Milbank and Ann Telnaes, will provide commentary and analysis of the results, offering perspectives from both sides of the aisle.
  • Multi-channel interactivity: Messenger users can share how they feel about the election and see how they compare to others using the Washington Post bot, and Alexa device owners can ask for election season analysis via The Post’s Elections skill.
