From National Editor Scott Wilson and Deputy National Editor Lori Montgomery:

We are thrilled to announce that Josh White, a highly successful reporter and editor who transformed The Post’s education coverage, will lead our newly expanded America Desk. And we are equally delighted that Simone Sebastian will serve as deputy America Editor, building on her impressive work as an editor with Wonkblog and PostEverything. Together, they will guide some of our most ambitious enterprise work, manage coverage of the nation’s biggest breaking news stories and design new ways of explaining this fractured country.

Josh is one of The Post’s most gifted editors, brimming with ideas, energy and encouragement. During his four years running Local’s 12-person education team, Josh dramatically expanded our coverage of national education issues, launched a popular higher-education blog, and increased the team’s online audience. He has jumped aggressively on breaking news, establishing his staff as The Post’s frontline response to campus violence. And he has helped his reporters find and tell the big stories, such as the marriage of God and guns at Liberty University, the Mississippi school district ordered to desegregate more than six decades late and, perhaps most notably, the unraveling of gang rape allegations at the University of Virginia, which spawned a broader project on campus sexual assault.

For Josh, this is a return to National, where he worked as a military correspondent during the Iraq conflict. He came to The Post as a summer intern in 1998, and began his career on the Virginia desk, where he helped lead our coverage of the Washington-area snipers. Josh is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Simone joined The Post in July 2014 and has risen quickly with a combination of digital savvy and intellectual firepower. She thinks and writes clearly about the demands this moment places on our journalism, urging us in her memo for the job to “unveil the rich tapestry of overlapping ideals, surprising contradictions and shared struggles that make up the modern American experience.”

Hired as an assistant editor in Outlook, Simone commissioned some of that section’s most memorable work, including Barbara Bowman’s story that outlined charges of rape against Bill Cosby. For the past year, Simone has been an assignment editor on Financial, managing Wonkblog and running the staff’s enterprising coverage of drug pricing. She came to The Post from the Houston Chronicle, where she edited an award-winning energy blog. She began her career with a two-year, three-stop Hearst Fellowship ending at the San Francisco Chronicle. A graduate of Columbia University, Simone has a master’s degree in multimedia reporting from the City University of New York.

Josh and Simone will begin their new assignments in the coming weeks. Please welcome them to the National staff.
