Chris Meighan, director of emerging news products, Coleen O’Lear, editorial director of emerging news products, and Amy King, design director of emerging news products and editor of The Lily:
The Emerging News Products team is excited to announce the staff of our Snapchat Discover team. Since its launch in February, The Washington Post’s Discover stories have enjoyed steady audience growth, exposing our top-notch journalism to new readers through bold storytelling techniques, expert curation and thoughtful editing and design.
It took a volunteer army from across the newsroom to launch The Post on Discover. Thanks to Tanya Sichynsky, Veronica Toney, Terro Veun, Kathy Lee, Nikita Mandhani, Dara Elasfar, Chris Ballard, Ryan Bacic, Amy Cavenaile, Doris Truong, Jhaan Elker, Daron Taylor, Steven Bohner, Shelly Tan, Glenn Yoder, James Hobbs, Julio Negron and their managers for their time, ideas and hard work. Four members of the team will continue this work:
John Taylor is Editor for Snapchat. John came to The Post in 2010 as a multiplatform editor in news and sports. He spent the past four years as the multiplatform editor for The Post’s Weekend section and Going Out Guide. He also contributed stories to the department (primary topics: beer and Bob Dylan), and in early 2015 started writing the “Things to do in D.C. this weekend” feature. A Virginia native, John joined The Post from The Washington Times, where he served as assistant and deputy sports editor. He also served as SB Nation’s first director of editorial operations and as a special projects editor at USA Today, working on magazines.
Chris Barber is Design Editor for Snapchat. Chris came to The Post in 2012 as an art director for features. During his time here he has designed for the Food, Weekend, Travel, Health and daily Style sections. Chris was also a producer on the second version of our classic iPad app, helping to develop the panels used by the design team. Before coming to The Post, Chris was a senior designer at The San Diego Union-Tribune. Over his career Chris has been recognized multiple times by The Society for News Design for his excellence in design. Chris is an Indiana native and graduated from Ball State University.
Ryan Weber is a multiplatform editor for Snapchat. Ryan came to The Post in 2014 as a Dow Jones News Editing intern on the Multiplatform Desk. He joined the desk full time at the end of that summer, working on the print product in the evenings and later copy editing breaking news in the mornings. He grew up in South Dakota and Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In his free time Ryan is also a designer for the Cherry Fund, a D.C. nonprofit that raises money for HIV/AIDS organizations through dance events.
J.J. Alcantara is a designer for Snapchat. J.J. joined The Post in 2015 as a designer for the Emerging News Products team, working on its national suite of apps. He also worked on branding for several of The Post’s podcasts, including Daily 202, Other: Mixed Race in America and Fantasy Football Beat. Before coming to The Post, J.J was a designer at Gannett in both Phoenix and Asbury Park. J.J. was born Manila and grew up in San Francisco. He is a graduate of Louisiana State University.
