Announcement from Morning Mix Editor Fred Barbash and Morning Mix Deputy Editor Susan Hogan:

We are happy to announce that Allyson Chiu has joined the Morning Mix team as a staff writer.

In her few weeks with us she’s already made a big contribution, particularly with delightful stories about a cricket scandal in Australia, a hockey-dream-come-true in Chicago and the American basketball player banned from the Korean league because he was too tall.

No, she’s not a sports reporter. Allyson is just remarkably versatile.

Allyson was an intern on Local for three months, during which she covered the Montgomery County student walkout protesting gun violence,  wrote about local environmental initiatives and contributed to the school shootings database. She previously interned at the Medill Justice Project, the Pacific Daily News and the South China Morning Post.

Allyson will graduate in June from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where she studied journalism and integrated marketing communications. On campus, she was a reporter and editor for The Daily Northwestern, and also played on the university’s club volleyball team.

Born and raised in Guam, Allyson grew up by the beach and enjoys scuba diving, free diving and hiking. Her other hobbies include figure skating and binge-watching police procedurals. She is fluent in Chinese and conversational in Japanese.
