The Washington Post names Joanna Slater its new India bureau chief

We’re delighted to announce that Joanna Slater of the Toronto Globe and Mail will become The Post’s next India bureau chief.

For Joanna, this assignment represents something of an encore. She began her career in Asia, first in Hong Kong and then in India as a correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review and Asian Wall Street Journal. From 2000 to 2004, she was based in Mumbai, where she became bureau chief, learned Hindi, and met her husband on the set of a Bollywood movie.

Her accomplishments extend much more broadly. She was a Knight-Bagehot fellow at Columbia University and then covered financial markets in New York for the Journal from 2006 to 2010. Since 2010, she has been a foreign correspondent for the Globe and Mail based in the United States and Europe. As a U.S. correspondent, she has covered Wall Street, presidential campaigns and mass shootings from Newtown to Orlando to Las Vegas.

She was named the 2015 Journalist of the Year by the Canadian National Newspaper Awards for her work covering the European refugee crisis during a year based in Berlin. Her stories also won Canadian National Newspaper Awards for international coverage and for contributions to a project on thalidomide.

Joanna is a graduate of Smith College and earned two master’s degrees at Columbia. Her first newspaper job was at The Post’s bureau in her hometown of Toronto, where she worked as a summer intern for correspondents Anne Swardson and Charles Trueheart.

She will start work in the newsroom on June 4. She and her family (including two young sons) will move to India in August.
