The Georgian-style Maples manor house on Capitol Hill has had an eventful history.

Designed by William Lovering in 1795, the Maples was visited often by George Washington and purchased by Francis Scott Key in 1815, one year after he wrote “The Star Spangled Banner.”

It was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers during the War of 1812. And in 1936, the building was purchased by the Friendship House Association, a provider of social services that owned the house until a foreclosure in 2010.

Today, architects Cunningham and Quill and developer Altus Realty Partners have renovated the Maples and built new townhomes and condos on the site that surrounds the property’s south lawn.

Although the character provided by the architects and their homage to the original manor house are appealing, Christine Flohr, a buyer at the Maples, says she was attracted first by the location and second by the fact that she could buy a newly constructed home.

“Right now I rent in Logan Circle, and I’ve been looking at homes for just a few months,” Flohr says. “My biggest priority is my commute, because I work near Metro Center and wanted to have a quick Metro ride to work. I love the Eastern Market and spend a lot of time in the area, but I didn’t think I would find a condo, especially a new one, in that neighborhood.”

Move in next month: The Maples development, which faces 619 D St. SE and backs to South Carolina Avenue SE, has three new townhouses and 16 condominiums, including both flats and duplexes in the restored manor house and stables, plus the new “School House Row” and “Carriage House” buildings.

The developers dug an underground garage on the property that is connected to each building by elevators. One remaining parking space is available for sale at $40,000. The three townhouses, originally priced from $1.85 million to $1.9 million, have been sold, along with all the duplexes and many of the flats.

Five of the 19 residences are still available for purchase, priced from $489,900 to $719,900. Residents are expected to move into the Maples in May or June.

Flohr purchased a one-bedroom, one-bath unit in the Schoolhouse Row building which has an open floor plan and a balcony.

“Each home in the Maples is unique, which is something you don’t see that much in new construction,” Flohr says. “Plus the neighborhood is residential even though it’s so close to Metro, so it should be a little quieter at night and on weekends, compared to Logan Circle.”

Flohr says the open floor plan appeals to her, along with the large kitchen island, from which she can occasionally telecommute.

Views of Library of Congress: Among the remaining residences for sale, Unit 4C in Schoolhouse Row, priced at $709,900, is the largest with 1,284 finished square feet. This unit has a private entrance facing the south lawn and extra storage, including a large coat closet by the front door, a laundry room and a pantry off the kitchen with a round window.

The living and dining area has French doors that open onto a Juliet balcony, white oak flooring and recessed lighting. The kitchen has a large island, white quartz counters, white cabinets, a white glass backsplash and stainless steel Jenn-Air appliances.

“The architects wanted to maintain a Capitol Hill feel to these homes, so all the walls are extremely thick and all the windows have very deep window sills, even in the new sections of the units,” says Iris Dedja, a sales representative with Urban Pace.

Unit 4E, which has 1,278 square feet and is priced at $719,900, is similar to Unit 4C. The windows overlook the brick and metal roofs of nearby buildings, including the Manor House and the top of the Library of Congress.

Unit 4F, the largest of the one-bedroom residences with 786 square feet, is a corner unit with windows facing east, west and north. The living and dining area and the open kitchen are surrounded by six large windows. The unit is priced at $539,900.

The remaining two residences, each with one bedroom and one bath, are in the Manor House and are similar to units in the School House Row. These two residences are priced at $489,900 and $499,900, and each has 693 square feet.

What’s nearby: Residents at the Maples can walk to the Capitol Building and congressional offices, the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court and numerous museums on the National Mall.

Dozens of shops, bars and restaurants are within walking distance along Pennsylvania Avenue SE and Eighth Street SE, known as Barracks Row. Eastern Market and the William H. Rumsey Aquatic Center are also within walking distance. Residents can easily reach any part of the city via Metro and the DC Circulator Bus.

Schools: Brent Elementary, Jefferson Middle Academy, Eastern High.

Transit: Metro’s Eastern Market station with Blue, Orange and Silver Line service is blocks from the Maples, along with numerous Metrobus and DC Circulator stops and Capitol Bikeshare.
