The Enclave at Chaddsford in Brandywine may be most ideal for people with lots of clothing and other possessions that need to be stored but not lots of time to mow a large lawn.

That’s because many of the Arts and Crafts-style single-family houses — particularly the 2,684- to 3,498-square-foot Fairbanks model — have huge closets in the master suite and other bedrooms, but fairly small back yards.

Anyone comparing the older properties built by K. Hovnanian Homes in the nine-year-old development in Prince George’s County to the newer models would notice how floor plans have evolved: Dramatic, two-floor foyers aren’t so important anymore. The space saved by opting against that feature is now being devoted to making kitchens, family rooms, bedrooms and even closets larger.

“The houses are geared to ... homebuyers with two or three kids,” said Paulette Clark, a sales consultant. “It’s important to have the extra [space] in the bedrooms rather than in the foyer.”

Large rooms: The houses can be made larger with an optional three-level, six-foot extension, which adds space to the basement den, the first-floor family room and the closet in the master suite.

The family room and kitchen area includes hardwood floors, crown molding, a gas fireplace, granite countertops , cherry cabinets and stainless-steel appliances.

Buyers can select from two floor plans for the second floor — either three bedrooms and a loft or four bedrooms.

There is ample storage space — two linen closets and walk-in closets in all the bedrooms. The laundry room is also spacious with practically enough shelving to lay out and fold a whole load of clothing.

Any of the walls of the master suite is designed to accommodate a king-size bed, so the buyer wouldn’t be locked in to one particular layout.

The basement includes two sitting rooms, an office and a full bathroom.

Outside is a covered front porch — a wrap-around feature is extra.

First-floor master suite: A higher-end model called the Callahan features up to seven bedrooms, including a master suite on the first floor. Such first-floor master suites are becoming more popular with baby boomers who plan for the time when they can no longer navigate stairs or who have elderly parents living with them. A second master suite is on the second floor.

The top-of-the-line Riverton model, includes a first-floor space that can either be left open for a living room or closed off for a library.

Watching out for each other: The Enclave has a clubhouse, outdoor swimming pool, walking trails and tennis courts.

But Maritza Savoy, who moved into the community with her husband and 17-year-old daughter early this year, said she is most impressed with how the neighbors quickly bonded with one another.

“My daughter babysits kids in the community,” said Savoy, 42. “We celebrate birthdays with the neighbors and we do housewarmings” when someone new moves in.

Schools: Brandywine Elementary and Gwynn Park middle and high schools.

Transportation: Shuttle buses go to shopping areas, including Brandywine Crossing and the St. Charles Mall, and to the Branch Avenue Metro station.
