A master-planned community just a short drive from downtown Silver Spring has an array of single-family house styles and 150 acres of open space. In fact, it’s the open space and amenities that drew recent home buyer Cynthia Harris to the development.

Harris said she had been house hunting only for about a month before discovering the Poplar Run development.

She lives in a townhouse in the Technology Road industrial park area of Silver Spring and said she is looking forward to moving to her new house in Poplar Run. Harris said that she expects her new house to be completed by spring and that the location is very convenient for her.

“I knew immediately when I drove through the neighborhood, even before I toured the inside of a house, that I wanted to live there,” she said, adding that she was attracted to the clubhouse, pools, picnic area and walking trails set within the community.

Neo-traditional home designs: Winchester Homes, the builder, offers a host of options for buyers to personalize their houses, including enlarging rooms with bump-out extensions, expanded kitchen islands with built-in tables and extra windows for plenty of natural lighting.

There are two house styles and various floor plans within each. The first is the lifestyle collection with more traditional models. But Winchester recently began offering a new series of houses it calls neo-traditional which tends to blend the old with the new, creating a trendier feel.

Harris chose a four-bedroom, three-bath floor plan from the neo-traditional collection. Her new house, the Lexington, comes with an upgraded gourmet kitchen and nine-foot-high ceilings on the second level. “I love the open kitchen and great room, the bedroom- level laundry room, and the large lower level,” said Harris. She added that she appreciates the many features in her house that came standard, such as granite countertops, stainless-steel appliances, fireplace, hardwood floors and crown molding.

Dramatic staircase: There’s a decorated model available to tour for each of the two collections. The Barrington is the model for the neo-traditional series, and it comes with a sunny open floor plan, with the kitchen, breakfast nook and great room all flowing seamlessly into one another. The model’s kitchen has white cabinetry, which provides a contrast to the black countertops. There are four bedrooms on the second level, and the owner’s suite contains a spacious walk-in closet and upgraded bath with a large soaking tub. The basement has been finished as a multifunctional lower level with a recreation room and movie-viewing area.

A second model showcases a home designed with the more traditional floor plan. The Sedona, at 3,615 square feet, is the second-largest model. The focal point of the entry is an oversize staircase in the two-story foyer with a second-level overlook.

The house features a center hall floor plan allowing for a peek into the formal dining room and living room on either side. A separate family room, kitchen and study are in the rear of the house. The model has upgraded wood flooring throughout the main two levels, bold-colored accent walls, designer light fixtures, along with a spacious owner’s suite with a sitting area and luxury bath with double-vanity sinks. It also has a finished lower level with a full bathroom.

Pools and fishing lakes: The community offers lots of recreation, including community pools and a clubhouse where homeowners can meet. Other features include a biking and hiking trail, picnic pavilions, tot lots, a lake for fishing, sports courts and playing fields.

What’s nearby: Poplar Run is close to downtown Silver Spring, shops and restaurants.

Schools: Glenallan Elementary, Col. Brook Lee Middle, John F. Kennedy High.

Transit: The community is accessible to the Glenmont Metro station as well as major commuter routes, such as the Intercounty Connector, Interstate 270 and Interstate 495.
