New four-story townhouses are going up in Old Town Alexandria that complement the neighborhood’s architecture and natural charm. Once completed, there will be 18 residences situated in a quaint neighborhood off Powhatan Street where older homes mix with several local businesses.
Comstock Homes, a builder that specializes in the Washington region, opened the Towns at 1333, reflective of the community’s address, this summer. The Northern Virginia development is surrounded by some of the area’s most popular dining, shopping, arts and historical attractions.
Daingerfield Island, a waterfront park with walking and biking trails, is just a short walk away and ideal for picnics and airplane spotting.
All of the residences come with three bedrooms, three full bathrooms and one powder room off the main level. There’s also a convenient two-car garage in back of each unit. The garage also works as storage for those who choose to take full advantage of this pedestrian-friendly, walkable community.
A Sunday afternoon drive-by of the northeast Alexandria neighborhood showed a number of people walking dogs, riding bikes, pushing baby strollers and chatting with neighbors.
Four levels: There will be four sets of buildings. Sunlight streams through the plethora of windows throughout the residences. There are also townhouses available for an October delivery for buyers looking to get in before the holiday rush begins.
Sales manager Frank Gstrein said that each residence will have its own wrought-iron- gated private entry around the front yard that will add to the curb appeal. Guests enter the residences through a foyer on the bottom floor that leads to one of the secondary bedrooms and a garage.
A staircase leads to the main living quarters. This bright airy space has the kitchen between the dining room and a 19- by 12-foot family room. The townhouses will come with hardwood floors throughout, including the staircase, and a state-of-the-art kitchen with a large center island that doubles as a breakfast bar. Elegant but trendy light fixtures highlight the kitchen and dining area.
The model home has white granite countertops and white cabinetry that contrasts nicely with the dark hardwood flooring. A built-in shelving unit also comes on this level. The builder placed a powder room with a pedestal sink on the landing so that it’s out of the way of the main level rooms.
Loft retreat with terrace: The third level has two bedrooms. Each bedroom, including ones on the lower level, has its own private en suite bathroom. The owner’s suite is spacious with a large walk-in closet. In the model home the owner’s suite has a beamed ceiling with recessed lights. The master bath has a striking black-tile design surrounding the soaking tub and a shower that comes with a bench.
While many builders only feature nine-foot-high ceilings on the main level then drop to eight-feet ones upstairs, Gstrein said, “We’re carrying nine-foot ceilings all the way up so that you get that open feeling.”
Another set of stairs leads up to a bonus room that can be used as a loft retreat, spare bedroom, study or game room. It comes with a vaulted ceiling and glass doors that open onto a terrace with views overlooking Alexandria. It’s also an ideal place to watch the fireworks during the holiday.
The terrace is standard on all the residences. It is completely private with a buffer that separates the homeowners from their neighbors. The model showcases the outdoor room with rugs, a table and chairs on one side and a cozy couch and ottoman living-room like set up on the other side. There’s also plumbing for an outdoor kitchen.
So far, Gstrein said residents have come from all over, including a recent buyer who relocated from Germany.

Transit: The community is close to Braddock Road Metro on the Blue and Yellow lines. Interstate 495 is a few minutes away. There’s also bike share station across the street.
