After living in a large, master-planned community in Loudoun County, Jim and Diana Shelvin moved to a much smaller, more intimate neighborhood in Vienna with a shorter commute and more luxurious homes.
Million-dollar European-inspired homes on spacious lots stand out in the exclusive Maymont Estates community near Tysons Corner. Once completed, the development will consist of 58 single-family houses.
“It’s a family-friendly community,” said Jim Shelvin. “Even though we were in a 5,000-person, master-planned community, we didn’t know our neighbors.”
Jim works for a private-equity firm in Bethesda, and his wife is a lawyer in Virginia, so they wanted to stay in the area.
“The location is awesome. I can get on the Beltway from the back roads and be in Georgetown Park in 15 minutes,” he said.
Move-up buyers: Many of Maymont’s residents are move-up buyers coming from Arlington and Alexandria to start families, said Melanie Green-Karol, director of sales and marketing for the developer, Basheer & Edgemoore.
“It is a great place to raise your family,” she said.
Maymont Estates this year won a “community of the year” award from the National Association of Home Builders.
The brick-and-stone exterior designs are reminiscent of European architecture. The homes have several other distinctive features — two-story verandas, covered entryways, three-car side-load garages and a variety of dramatic roof and window styles.
With 4,000 to 6,000 square feet of living space, the homes are on sprawling lots with professionally landscaped lawns kept green by in-ground sprinkler systems.
The community was built on a multi-generational family orchard field.
The neighborhood’s winding, tree-lined streets and the natural landscape of the surrounding woodlands offer scenic vistas. There are walking paths and several parks in the community, including Summer Pond Park, which has a large pond.
The development was designed to integrate green space and parkland throughout the neighborhood, said Green-Karol. “So when our homeowners are not at work, they can enjoy the community’s walking trails and parks.”
Elevator among the amenities: The homes include numerous high-end features — sunrooms, conservatories, first-floor guest suites, four-car garages. But nothing says luxury quite like having an elevator in your single-family residence.
A two-person elevator, disguised as a closet with a nearby call button, can zip homeowners from the large lower-level recreation room to the third-floor sleeping quarters.
Buyers can also select spacious studios above the garages, lower-level media rooms, spiral staircases and salon baths with large, seat-equipped, dual-head shower stalls.
Wet bar in master suite: Standard features include 10-foot ceilings on the main level, oak hardwood flooring in some main-floor rooms, stainless steel and granite in the kitchens, large his-and-her walk-in closets and a fireplace in the family room.
The Grantham, Innsworth and Yarborough plans all have four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms, while the Lanesborough plan comes with five bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms.
The Lanesborough has a main-level owner’s suite, and the Yarborough comes with a courtyard foyer entrance with a two-story rotunda.
Jim Shelvin purchased the Innsworth model, saying he and his wife especially love the double-deck porches/verandas on the front of the home.
The Innsworth has a two-story foyer and a family room with a two-sided fireplace shared by a keeping room off the kitchen, a library and a sunroom.
The owner’s suite comes with a sitting room, and the model showcases an optional wet bar and entertainment center in the sitting room.
Plethora of shopping options: Just minutes from Interstate 495, the neighborhood offers easy access to a variety of shopping and entertainment options in Tysons Corner.
“It is very unusual to find 58 lots and a community like this so close to Tysons Corner and major commuting routes and business centers,” said Green-Karol.
Vienna has a cozy downtown with unique shops, a town green where residents gather for concerts and a 45-mile bike path that goes through the town.
Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is also just down the street.
Schools: Westbriar Elementary, Kilmer Middle School and Marshall High School.
Transit: The community is minutes from Interstate 495. The closest Metro stop is the Orange line to Vienna Metro station. The new Silver line Metro service will serve nearby Tysons Corner.
