This is a take on a classic named after the 1922 movie starring Rudolph Valentino as a bullfighter. The original calls for freshly squeezed orange juice; using the juice of blood oranges, which are in season, makes the cocktail nicer.
For Scotch, use a light single-malt that is not too smoky, such as Glenfiddich or Glenkinchie, or stick with a blended Scotch. As an alternative, this can be served in an ice-filled highball glass, in which case, double the amount of orange juice, then top with a splash of club soda.
- 1 ounce scotch
- 3/4 ounce sweet vermouth
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed blood orange juice
- 3/4 ounce cherry-flavored liqueur, such as Cherry Heering
- Thin slice of orange, for garnish
Fill a cocktail shaker two-thirds full with ice. Add the Scotch, vermouth, juice and cherry-flavored liqueur. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds, then strain into a cocktail (martini) glass. Garnish with the
slice of orange.
