This is the last of a series on summer cocktails by Washington area mixologists. The recipes were collected by Victoria Vergason, owner of the Hour, a cocktail accoutrements shop in Alexandria.
The drink is an American classic and, since a July 2011 proclamation, Washington's native cocktail.
Author Derek Brown is a Washington native as well. He is on the board of the Museum of the American Cocktail in New Orleans and a founding member of the DC Craft Bartenders Guild. In 2009, he was invited by the Obamas to bartend at the White House. He has referred to the gin rickey as "an air conditioner in a glass," so it's no surprise that every July, his guild celebrates Rickey Month.
There are plenty of variations but this one's basic, and delicious.
- 1/2 lime
- 2 ounces gin, preferably Old Tom Gin
- Sparkling mineral water, such as Apollinaris
Squeeze the juice of the lime into a highball glass, then drop the lime shell in the glass. Add the gin, then fill with ice. Top with the sparkling mineral water and stir.
