Vered Guttman's grandmother taught her to make this simple mixture of date molasses (called silan, a thick, sweet syrup made from pressed dates) and chopped walnuts. It is more pourable than standard harosets, which contain fruit, nuts, honey and wine.
If desired, add a bit of ground cardamom, as Guttman does.
We found date molasses at Yekta Supermarket in Rockville (301-984-1190).
Yield: Makes about 3/4 cup
- 1/4 cup date molasses (silan) (see headnote)
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom (optional)
Combine the date molasses, nuts and cardamom, if using, in a small bowl. Serve at room temperature.
