This cocktail is for the slightly more ambitious host, as it adds a third ingredient: the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon half.
Be sure to use ginger beer, not ginger ale. The beer's more assertive taste will marry well with Averna, an herbal Italian amaro.
- 4 ounces ginger beer (see headnote)
- 1 lemon half
- 2 ounces Averna (an Italian amaro)
- 1 round, thin slice of lime
Fill a highball glass with ice. Add the ginger beer, then place a fine-mesh strainer over the glass and squeeze in the juice from the lemon half (this should be about 1/2 ounce). Pour the Averna on top. Garnish with the slice of lime.
