Sarah Rosner of Bourbon Steak in Washington is known for her playful and delicious cocktails. Think of the Walk About as a refined Screwdriver, with turmeric providing earthy spice, the honey supplying sweetness and a richer body, and the soda water adding fizz.

“If we can’t take an actual walk about outside, this is the next best thing,” she says.

Honey syrup is easier to incorporate into the drink, but you can substitute honey.


When you scale a recipe, keep in mind that cooking times and temperatures, pan sizes and seasonings may be affected, so adjust accordingly. Also, amounts listed in the directions will not reflect the changes made to ingredient amounts.

Tested size: 1 servings

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 1 ounce fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 ounce honey syrup or raw honey, see NOTE
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • 1 pinch ground turmeric, plus more for garnish
  • Ice
  • Soda water, to top


Combine the vodka, orange juice, honey syrup or honey, lemon juice, bitters and turmeric in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake until well chilled, about 12 seconds. Strain into an ice-filled highball glass filled with ice and top with a splash of soda. Stir gently, sprinkle with a little more turmeric and serve.

NOTE: To make honey syrup, combine 1/2 cup water and 1 cup of honey in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring until the honey has dissolved. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 5 minutes. Cool completely before using or storing in the refrigerator in a glass jar, where it will keep for up to 4 weeks.
