In the two weeks since our last rankings, many of the D.C. area’s best boys’ basketball teams have faced some form of the holiday blues.

Christmas and New Year’s often bring stiff competition as teams partake in competitive tournaments and showcase events. The damage from this stretch can vary, but few teams escape without a loss.

For former No. 1 Paul VI, two losses to strong national opponents were made worse by a shocking home to against McNamara. As a result, DeMatha takes over the No. 1 spot for the first time this winter. The Stags came away from the holiday season with four victories.

Public school powers Eleanor Roosevelt and South County held on to their spots in the top 10, while Potomac (Md.) and Yorktown are among this week’s three newcomers.

The Stags followed up winning the DeMatha Christmas Classic by traveling to California and taking down national power Mater Dei.

2. St. John’s (13-1) LR: 3

Ishmael Leggett scored 18 points as the Cadets opened the new year with a 53-44 win over Good Counsel.

3. Gonzaga (10-3) LR: 5

Chuck Harris and Terrance Williams chipped in 15 points apiece in a 79-54 win over O’Connell.

4. Eleanor Roosevelt (5-1) LR: 4

A shorthanded Raiders team held on for a 66-64 overtime win against Wise.

5. St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (11-2) LR: 6

The Saints fell to No. 1 DeMatha in the championship of the DeMatha Christmas Classic but routed Flint Hill in the IAC/MAC Challenge.

6. Paul VI (7-3) LR: 1

The Panthers have dropped three straight, falling to Archbishop Stepinac (N.Y.), Bishop McNamara and Wasatch Academy (Utah).

7. South County (11-0) LR: 7

With a 70-55 victory over Wakefield, the Stallions won the George Long Holiday Hoops Tournament.

8. Episcopal (7-1)LR: 14

Darius Johnson put up 21 points in a 68-54 win over No. 13 Sidwell Friends in the IAC/MAC Challenge.

9. St. Andrew’s (12-2) LR: 10

Spencer Hayes had 19 points and nine rebounds in the Lions’ 83-60 win over Landon in the IAC/MAC Challenge.

10. Theodore Roosevelt (14-0) LR: 15

Thirteen players scored in the Rough Riders’ 93-48 win over Arcadia (Va.) in the Governor’s Challenge.

11. Oxon Hill (5-0) LR: 13

The Clippers won three games in three days at the Mount Vernon Holiday Classic.

12. Rock Creek Christian (10-3) LR: 9

After two losses at the Slam Dunk to the Beach event in Lewes, Del., the Eagles bounced back with a strong showing at the Governor’s Challenge.

13. Sidwell Friends (12-2) LR: 11

The Quakers never got their offense going in a 68-54 loss to No. 8 Episcopal.

14. National Christian (8-2) LR: 12

The Eagles lost two games at the Slam Dunk to the Beach.

15. Middleburg Academy (10-2) LR: NR

The Dragons earned wins over St. Charles and Western Branch at the Governor’s Challenge.

16. Potomac (Md.) (6-0) LR: NR

Corey Dyches and Jordan Beckett combined for 38 points in a 73-58 win over Douglass.

17. St. Charles (7-1) LR: 16

The Spartans bounced back from a tight loss to No. 15 Middleburg Academy by beating Gaithersburg and Gwynn Park.

18. Gaithersburg (5-2) LR: 8

The Trojans had a rough finish to 2019, falling to Western Branch and No. 17 St. Charles.

19. Wilson (11-3) LR: 17

Miasiah Brown had 22 points and three steals in a one-point win over Riverdale Baptist.

20. Yorktown (11-0) LR: NR

The Patriots are riding a new, high-octane offense to an undefeated start.
