The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend always brings great basketball in the D.C. area. This year was no different: Many of the area’s best programs took part in competitive showcase events and tournaments.

Locally, the Kevin Durant MLK Classic at the St. James featured an exciting mix of local and national programs. On the first of two days of action, Wilson had the strongest showing — it picked up two victories.

Paul VI traveled to Missouri to play in the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions, a prestigious national event. The Panthers took down Greenwood (Mo.) and Washington (Okla.) to make it to the championship game. They fell to Virginia powerhouse Oak Hill in the final.

DeMatha and Gonzaga both played on Day 3 of the Hoophall Classic in Massachusetts. While the Eagles fell to La Lumiere (Ind.), the Stags were victorious against Simeon Career Academy (Ill.). With the win, DeMatha holds on to the top spot in the rankings.

The Eagles dropped two tough games, falling to No. 1 DeMatha and Indiana’s La Lumiere.

5. St. John’s (15-3) LR: 2

The Cadets were upset by Archbishop Carroll, 47-43, on Friday night.

6. Eleanor Roosevelt (8-2) LR: 6

Joemel McNair and Quinton Mincey combined for 35 points in the Raiders’ win over Laurel.

7. South County (14-1) LR: 8

The Stallions put up 31 points in the third quarter of a 73-65 win over West Springfield.

8. Rock Creek Christian (17-4) LR: 7

The Eagles fell to Norcross (Ga.) at the Kevin Durant MLK Classic.

9. Potomac (Md.) (10-0) LR: 11

Corey Dyches had 32 points and 16 rebounds in a win over Friendly.

10. Sidwell Friends (12-2) LR: 10

The Quakers were idle last week.

11. St. Andrew’s (15-3) LR: 12

The Lions beat two Washington Catholic Athletic Conference teams by taking down McNamara and St. Mary’s Ryken.

12. Theodore Roosevelt (19-1) LR: 14

The Rough Riders had six players in double figures in a 93-68 win over Eastern.

13. Wilson (18-3) LR: 15

The Tigers won two games in one day at the Kevin Durant MLK Classic, taking down Virginia Academy and Norfolk Collegiate.

14. St. Charles (11-1) LR: 16

The Spartans beat McDonough and La Plata.

15. Middleburg Academy (12-3) LR: 17

The Dragons earned a 59-57 win over Carmel School (Va.).

16. National Christian (10-3) LR: 18

The Eagles had five players in double figures in a win over Capitol Christian.

17. Centreville (11-3) LR: 20

Mekhai Washington had 24 points and 15 rebounds in a 63-57 win over Hayfield.

18. Oxon Hill (8-2) LR: 13

The Clippers suffered their first local loss this season, falling to Largo by a point.

19. Bullis (13-4) LR: Not ranked

After picking up wins over Episcopal and John Paul the Great, the Bulldogs lost to St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes by five.

20. Episcopal (9-4) LR: 9

The Maroon bounced back from losses to John Paul the Great and Bullis by taking down Flint Hill, 72-70.
