In 2019-20, the top flight of English men’s and women’s soccer was a lonely place for Americans. The only regulars were Christian Pulisic, Chelsea’s rising star in his first Premier League season, and Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin.

Several Americans contracted by Premier League clubs bided their time with youth squads or played on loan — in the English second division, Germany, Austria and Sweden.

As a new campaign dawns, though, Pulisic and Yedlin will have company. Defender Tim Ream earned promotion to the Premier League with Fulham, which this past week also signed U.S. national team defender Antonee Robinson from Wigan, a second-tier club relegated to the third flight.

Goalkeeper Zack Steffen rejoined Manchester City after a year on loan with Fortuna Düsseldorf. Midfielder Indiana Vassilev, 19, made two appearances for Aston Villa this summer after the Premier League returned from the pandemic shutdown. And Southampton is reportedly pursuing U.S. midfielder Weston McKennie, 21, who since 2016 has been with Bundesliga side Schalke.

On the women’s side, midfielders Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle left the National Women’s Soccer League to sign with Manchester City. Forwards Tobin Heath and Christen Press are reportedly following suit by signing with Manchester United. The NWSL’s cancellation of the regular season for health and safety reasons prompted U.S. national team players to seek opportunities in Europe, where the novel coronavirus is under better control.

Robinson, a 23-year-old left back, was set to join AC Milan last winter, but medical issues scuttled the transfer. Fulham stepped up this month with a four-year contract, adding to its history of employing U.S. players. The list includes, among others, Clint Dempsey, Brian McBride, Carlos Bocanegra, Kasey Keller and Eddie Johnson.

The Premier League will open the season Sept. 11 to 14. Pulisic, 21, is expected to miss the start of the campaign because of a hamstring injury suffered in the FA Cup final. The Women’s Super League will get started Sept. 6.

Here is the rundown of more than 180 Americans abroad:

(Several players competing in lesser leagues or with reserve/youth squads are not listed. Americans with dual nationalities representing other national teams have also been omitted.)
