Ski jumping has been contested at every Winter Olympics since the first in 1924 and calls for an equal mix of bravery and precision. The end result can be thrilling — the jumper hurling off a ramp and landing cleanly on the hill — or occasionally disastrous: Slovenian ski jumper Vinko Bogataj’s 1970 crash in Germany illustrated “the agony of defeat” for a generation of U.S. television viewers.
