Will the play-in tournament continue?

Commissioner Adam Silver and Evan Wasch, the NBA’s executive vice president for strategy and analytics, indicated in recent interviews that the league is happy with the play-in tournament. On a conference call last week, Wasch highlighted two positive impacts: late-season competition and viewership. Thanks to the expanded field, Wasch said 25 of the league’s 30 teams were still in playoff contention with a month to go, setting a record. Meanwhile, he added that television viewership was up 10 to 15 percent during the last month of the season compared with the previous month. Before the play-in tournament’s implementation, ratings during the schedule’s dog days typically dropped by 10 to 30 percent. “The league office’s view is that it’s working well in its current format,” Wasch said, noting that a final decision on bringing the play-in back for the 2022-23 season will be made this summer. “The feedback we’re getting from our teams or players and our fans is overwhelmingly positive. That does not mean it’s unanimously positive. There are certainly those who prefer a more traditional approach to the playoffs.”
