Justin Thomas defeated Will Zalatoris in a playoff to win the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa.

Thomas, a 29-year-old American, hadn’t won a major since claiming the 2017 PGA Championship. He entered Sunday seven shots off the lead but surged past third-round leader Mito Pereria and beat Zalatoris in a three-hole playoff to claim the second major title of his career.

Thomas’s comeback tied for the largest in the final round of the PGA Championship and the third-largest in major championship history. Pereria led for much of the day, but lost his lead with a double-bogey on the 18th hole and finished tied for third with Cameron Young at 4 under.

Past major winners like Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott all missed the weekend cut. So did Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Cantlay, the No. 1 and No. 5 players in the world. Tiger Woods, a 15-time major winner in his second tournament back after his serious car crash, was forced to withdraw Saturday night.
