Four takeaways from the Commanders’ 20-20 tie with the Giants

On third and two from the Washington 44-yard line, Daniel Jones was stopped for no gain. After the Commanders used their first timeout with 1:42 remaining, Giants Coach Brian Daboll kept his offense on the field, but only to try to draw Washington’s defense offside with a hard count. Alex Erickson called for a fair catch on Jamie Gillan’s ensuing punt at the Commanders’ 10-yard line. Washington has one timeout remaining. (Commanders 20, Giants 20, 1:36 remaining in overtime)

Washington crossed midfield on a 21-yard run by Curtis Samuel, but it failed to pick up another first down on its first drive in overtime. After Samuel was tackled for a one-yard gain to the Giants’ 43 on third and long, the Commanders brought out the punting unit. New York starts from its own 14-yard line. Washington’s defense forced a Giants punt after Daron Payne recorded his second sack of the game on third and five from the New York 43-yard line. The Commanders begin their next drive from their own 33-yard line. They can win the game with a field goal. (Commanders 20, Giants 20, 7:33 left in overtime)

Washington punted the ball away with 23 seconds remaining after cornerback Fabian Moreau dropped what would’ve been a devastating interception by Taylor Heinicke near midfield. The Giants took a knee, content to settle this one in overtime.

The Giants won the coin toss and elected to receive. A touchdown on this possession would end the game. (Commanders 20, Giants 20, end of the fourth quarter)

Washington gets the ball back with three timeouts and plenty of time to drive for the potential winning score after the Giants went three-and-out on three consecutive incompletions by Daniel Jones.

Darius Slayton dropped what would’ve been a big gain into Commanders territory on first down. It was Jones’s second incompletion of the day. His first was a spike to stop the clock at the end of the first half. The Commanders will begin at their own 24-yard line. (Giants 20, Commanders 20, 1:17 left in the fourth quarter)

The Commanders tied the game on a 28-yard catch and run by rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson, who broke a tackle and spun away from a defender en route to the end zone. Dotson’s touchdown capped an eight-play, 90-yard drive. Taylor Heinicke was 6-for-8 on the march. The Giants have all three timeouts remaining. On fourth and four from their own 27-yard line, the Commanders kept their offense on the field. Facing pressure from both sides, Taylor Heinicke scrambled to his left before throwing across his body and finding Curtis Samuel for a 20-yard gain. It’ll be second and 10 from the Washington 47 after the two-minute warning.

Earlier in the drive, the cart came out for Washington center Tyler Larsen, who appeared to have his leg rolled up on by a defender. That’s bad news for a Commanders offensive line that was already without Trai Turner and lost Sam Cosmi in the third quarter. (Giants 20, Commanders 13, 2:00 left in the fourth quarter)

A sack by cornerback Danny Johnson forced the Giants to punt on their third consecutive drive. New York center Jon Feliciano did Washington a favor by flexing in the direction of a group of Commanders defenders after a 12-yard catch and run by Darius Slayton, earning him a 15-yard taunting penalty.
