The NFL’s legal tampering period, a two-day stretch during which teams and players’ agents can negotiate deals, ame to an end Wednesday afternoon with the official start of free agency. Players and teams who agreed to contracts can now officially sign their deals after a busy stretch of agreements, and a lot more smoke surrounding the seemingly impending move by Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets.

Here’s what to know

  • Questions about Rodgers’s status persisted another day. Will the Packers trade him to the Jets? Will Rodgers stay in Green Bay? Will he retire? And if the potential deal with the Jets falls apart, where does that leave them? Rodgers appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday afternoon and told viewers he intends to play in New York. The Jets and Packers have yet to complete a trade, though.
  • Keep an eye on the market for Lamar Jackson. The Ravens gave him the nonexclusive franchise tag last week, meaning other teams can negotiate with the former league MVP; the Ravens would be able to match any offer sheet presented to Jackson, and if they decide to let him walk, his new team would owe them two first-round draft choices. Whether another team is willing to pay that price remains to be seen. Quarterbacks have been on the move already, though; Jimmy Garoppolo, who started 10 games for the San Francisco 49ers last season, is expected to sign a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.
  • The Washington Commanders are facing a potential sale, but they’re spending in free agency; the team agreed to a deal Sunday with defensive tackle Daron Payne and committed to another quarterback when they signed veteran Jacoby Brissett on Wednesday to work with Sam Howell after saying goodbye to Taylor Heinicke, who is headed to the Atlanta Falcons.
