March Madness highlights Princeton knocks off No. 2 seed Arizona; Furman stuns Virginia

March Madness was in full swing Thursday with the first full day of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, and it didn’t take long to see some major upsets. No. 15 seed Princeton shocked No. 2 Arizona, hours after No. 13 seed Furman stunned No. 4 Virginia with a late three-pointer. Elsewhere, Maryland held on to beat West Virginia; defending champion Kansas struggled early against Howard before establishing control; and top-seeded Houston fended off an upset bid from No. 16 Northern Kentucky.   • The afternoon games featured the defending champion Jayhawks, which beat Howard, 96-68, and overall No. 1 seed Alabama, which thrashed Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Coach Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide are under scrutiny because of top player Brandon Miller’s involvement in a fatal shooting.
  • Top-seeded Houston labored to a 63-52 win against No. 16 seed Northern Kentucky during the evening slate, while Texas and UCLA — fellow Final Four contenders — cruised to victories over Colgate and UNC Asheville, respectively.
