The Terrapins have taken care of business when necessary at home over their past three nonconference games and will look for that to continue against an aggressive and athletic Georgia Southern squad. With Saturday night’s game serving as a tuneup before the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday against Northwestern, Maryland can use this game to work out the kinks and, if necessary, survive thanks to talent alone.
Georgia Southern will try to slow down Maryland’s offense with multiple zone looks, throwing some schemes the Terps haven’t seen this season. Against Lafayette on Tuesday, Maryland shot over 65 percent in the second half, rolling through the zone with sharp passes into post players at the high post and short corner, then cutting off them for layups.
If the Eagles pack the zone and dare Maryland to beat them from the outside, the Terps will need to discover their shooting stroke. Maryland ranks 11th in the ACC at 31 percent from three-point range but have the fourth-fewest attempts, a testament to the Terps’ insistence in getting the ball to their post players. However, they’ll need to get hot at some point. Why not now?
