Virginia men’s soccer hosts U-Conn. in NCAA quarterfinals

Virginia men vs. Connecticut

What: NCAA quarterfinal.

Where: Klockner Stadium, Charlottesville.

When: 7 p.m.

Internet: Game broadcast at

Records: No. 8 Cavaliers 12-5-5; Huskies 12-2-8.

At stake: College Cup semifinal berth against No. 4 California or No. 5 Maryland on Dec. 13 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

Outlook: The Cavaliers, in their first NCAA quarterfinal since 2009, knocked off Big East teams in the past two rounds (St. John’s and Marquette) and will look to eliminate a former Big East power that fell in the American Athletic Conference final on penalty kicks last month. Led by junior MF Eric Bird (seven goals, five assists), Virginia’s balanced attack includes 10 players with at least two goals. Junior D Matt Brown (18 starts) is serving a red-card suspension. The unseeded Huskies are unbeaten in 17 straight (10-0-7) and have executed upsets via penalty-kick tiebreakers in the previous two rounds, ousting No. 16 UMBC and top-seeded UCLA on the road. Canadian freshman MF Cyle Larin scored twice against the Bruins for 14 overall, and Jamaican junior Andre Blake (37 shutouts in 69 career matches) is widely regarded as the top goalkeeper in the country.
