DCSAA football semifinal preview: Friendship Collegiate vs. KIPP
By Roman Stubbs,
KIPP at Friendship Collegiate
Saturday, 1 p.m. at Anacostia High School
At stake: A berth in the DCSAA title game on Dec. 1 at Howard. The winner will face the Turkey Bowl winner.
Watch for: Friendship Collegiate’s dominance at line of scrimmage. Offensive lineman Derwin Gray has been one of the cornerstones to running back Jonathan Haden’s productive junior campaign. Haden has had some huge performances this season (including 220 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Parkersburg South) and Friendship Collegiate (6-3) will try to streamline the running game against a KIPP defense that has allowed just 24 points in the past five games. KIPP ’s Anthony Elliot is a two-way threat who caught a touchdown pass and scored two defensive touchdowns to lead the Panthers (8-2) past Perry Street Prep last week.
Skinny: KIPP has won five straight games, including last week’s 20-12 win over Perry Street Prep (which was the last school to beat KIPP). Friendship Collegiate has lost three straight and must shake off its rust quickly in its first game since Nov. 3.
