Georgetown lacrosse set to name Matt Rewkowski and Brian Phipps as assistant coaches
By Christian Swezey,
The Georgetown men’s lacrosse program is expected to fill its two full-time assistant coaching positions by naming Matt Rewkowski from Cornell as offensive coordinator and Brian Phipps from Maryland as an assistant in charge of goalies, three sources familiar with the search said Tuesday.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the results of the search.
Rewkowski, 29, had been the offensive coordinator at Cornell the past two seasons. He also had spent four seasons at Hofstra and one at Denver. Rewkowski is considered a strong Xs and Os coach who tailors his offense to the strengths of its players; sometimes the scheme is attack-oriented and other times it relies on dodging from the midfield.
Meantime, Phipps is a 2010 graduate of Maryland. He started in goal for at least part of each of his four seasons; last year he was a volunteer assistant with the Terrapins. Phipps also was a 2006 All-Met at Severn.
Phipps will work primarily with junior Jake Haley, who had a strong showing in fall and preseason workouts in 2011 but played behind two seniors during the season.
The Hoyas finished 7-6 last season and missed both the NCAA and Big East tournaments.
The hires follow Maryland defensive coordinator Kevin Warne being named head coach last week. Warne, 35, had helped Maryland reach the NCAA title game each of the past two years despite having a completely different starters on close defense in each year.
