Georgetown men’s basketball preview

Hoyas at a glance

What we know: Junior Markel Starks, who started 25 games last season, faces a tall order in taking over primary ballhandling duties from the selfless and versatile Jason Clark, who graduated. But with a career ambition as a U.S. congressman and leadership qualities to match, Starks should thrive in his role as floor general for a young Hoyas squad that lacks a single senior.

What we don’t know: With junior Hollis Thompson departing for the professional ranks and Clark and Henry Sims graduating, Georgetown will be without its top three scorers from last season. It’s not automatically clear where the Hoyas will turn for point production, although Otto Porter Jr., who earned the nickname Otto-Matic in a sterling freshman debut, is the odds-on favorite.

Prediction: The young Hoyas will be tested immediately, opening against Florida and facing Tennessee, Texas and possibly Indiana before Big East play begins. If they grow from the experience, regardless of their early-season record, they could emerge as a surprising force in the Big East and again reach the second round of the NCAA tournament.
