Wright – a Loyola recruit – and fellow three-year starter Muhammad lead a stacked North Point squad that should contend for its second Maryland 4A title in three years after a state semifinal loss to Eleanor Roosevelt last season. . . . Briscoe returns for state title contender Thomas Stone, which held a nine-point halftime lead in last year’s Maryland 3A championship game before losing the title to Patterson. . . .

Hunter and forwards Tavi Thomas and Josh Smith form a strong nucleus for Calvert, which should be best-equipped to challenge the league’s two clear frontrunners. . . . McDonough senior point guard Marquel Austin and senior forward Rashad Kennedy team with Stone transfer guard Mohammed Sulemana to power the Rams. . . . Longtime North Point assistant Ed Mouton takes over the head job at Westlake, where senior point guard Charles Clark is the most experienced returner. . . . Senior guard Ronnie Harmon is the leading returning scorer for retooling La Plata. . . . Northern is likely a year away from factoring into the SMAC title race under new head coach Frank Moore, who won two straight Maryland 2A titles as the girls’ coach at Calvert. Patriots junior D.J. Workcuff will miss the early part of the season with a finger injury.
