Boys’ basketball: Middleburg Academy hires Craig Booth as coach

Craig Booth said he has agreed to become the boys’ basketball coach at Middleburg Academy, replacing Ryan Dehaven.

Hired in August when Gary Hall resigned after one year as the Dragons’ coach, DeHaven guided the team to a 28-10 record this past season.

Booth, 49, runs the Hoop Booth club basketball program that draws most of its players from Prince William and Stafford counties. Seth Allen, the Fredericksburg Christian senior guard who has signed with Maryland, played for Hoop Booth.

“I like the models set by Bishop O’Connell, Paul VI and DeMatha – start with guys in the ninth grade and develop them into ballplayers,” Booth said Tuesday. “I definitely want to compete against the top private schools in the area. We want to play a strong schedule. I’m going to reach out to the top programs. I plan on working kids year-round and develop them.”

Middleburg Athletic Director Carla Adgate said in a text message that no contracts have been signed but an announcement is planned for next week when class resumes following spring break. She declined to comment further.
