Boys’ basketball: Powell Jr. hired as Takoma Academy coach

Harvey Powell Jr., an assistant coach the past five seasons for the Catholic University men’s basketball team, has been hired as the boys’ basketball coach at Takoma Academy. He replaces Juan Hill and takes over a team that went 23-7.

Powell, 34, previously was an assistant coach at Georgetown Prep under Dwayne Bryant for three years and worked with former Maryland star Buck Williams’s club team program.

“I’m one of those guys who had the coaching bug,” Powell said. “I went to DeMatha and didn’t have a chance to play basketball, but I’d hang around the gym when Coach [Morgan] Wootten had practice and learned as much as I could.

“Did the same things when I went to Maryland and watched Coach [Gary] Williams run practice. They didn’t know it, but I picked up a lot of things.”

Powell is a special education teacher in Prince George’s County.
