Thomas Gaffney, who guided Stuart’s girls’ basketball team last season, has been hired to take the helm of Stone Bridge’s girls’ basketball team, Athletic Director Dave Hembach said Wednesday.

In his only year at the Falls Church school, Gaffney’s team finished 0-23. He had spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Fairfax.

Gaffney now takes over a promising Stone Bridge squad that enjoyed its best season in school history: a first-ever Virginia AAA Liberty District title last winter and a 23-4 record, falling in the second round of the Northern Region tournament.

Gaffney replaces Chris Jones, who stepped down in March after three seasons at the helm, citing a desire to spend more time with his family and infant son.
