The cold, rainy conditions during Monday’s first round of the Virginia AAA golf tournament at Red Wing Golf Club in Virginia Beach weren’t kind to many of the area’s local golfers.

Led by Connor Messick’s even-par score of 72, Chantilly sits in second place in the team competition after carding a 300, two strokes behind leader Mills Godwin. Chantilly, which won the rain-shortened Northern Region championship last week, will tee off for Tuesday’s final round at 9 a.m. with hopes of improving on last year’s second-place finish.

“It wasn’t our best day and the course was pretty tough,” Chargers Coach Kurt Sporkmann said. “It’s probably the first cold, rainy round that my team has played in all year, and that’s not making excuses. It’s just reality.”

The same could be said for Madison, as the Northern Region runner-up totaled a score of 314 and sits seventh among the eight contenders after the first day. Battlefield, the Northwest Region champion, is in third with a score of 301.

Messick and Battlefield’s Khushboo Thiagaraj posted the lowest individual scores of the day among Northern Virginia golfers, four strokes behind leader Jason Park from James River, who shot a 4-under-par 68. Madison’s Amber Liu shot a 1 over 73 and sits in seventh place heading into Tuesday’s final round.
