The Maryland girls’ soccer tournament kicked off Thursday, and with the first round in the books, each class is down to 32 teams as the tournament heads to next week’s regional quarterfinals. State champions will be crowned Nov. 14-16 at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, but there will be several championship-caliber matchups between now and then. Here’s a look at what Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s County and SMAC teams will face as they make their push for a state title.

Anne Arundel’s South River (4A) and Howard County’s River Hill (3A) emerged from their regionals to win state titles last season. This fall, many of the area’s top teams are striving to realize their championship aspirations.

Maryland 4A

(2012 final: South River 2, Bethesda-Chevy Chase 1)

4A South Region:

#1 Seeds: Parkdale (7-2), Eleanor Roosevelt (9-2)

Potential matchups to watch:

Eleanor Roosevelt vs. Bowie, region semifinal

●Parkdale vs. Wise or Bowie, region final

In this all-P.G. region, county champion Roosevelt and Parkdale are top seeds, though Parkdale’s regular-season game against Roosevelt was cancelled and the Panthers lost 8-0 to Bowie. If the Panthers cruise through their top half of the South bracket, they’ll be in for a touch matchup with whoever — Roosevelt, Bowie or Wise — emerges from the bottom.

4A North Region:

#1 Seeds: [Catonsville (13-1, Baltimore County Champions)] Sherwood (7-4-1)

Potential matchups to watch:

Blake vs. Sherwood, region semifinal

Montgomery 4A North teams populate the bottom half of the North regional bracket, where Sherwood and Blake (7-4-3) take the one and two seeds, respectively. In a relatively weak region, those two teams should make their way to the semifinal, where they can finish business left unresolved by a scoreless tie in the teams’ lone regular season matchup.

4A West Region:

#1 Seeds: Bethesda-Chevy Chase (12-1-1), Quince Orchard (10-1-1)

Potential matchups to watch:

●No. 4 B-CC vs. No.5 Whitman, region semifinal

●Quince Orchard vs. Gaithersburg, region semifinal

●No. 4 B-CC vs. Quince Orchard, region final

The 4A West = the gauntlet. With Montgomery 4A South teams and a few of the up-county’s best sprinkled in, whoever emerges from this quarter of the bracket will have earned their berth in the state semis by beating highly-talented teams they’ve likely already faced. If Whitman and B-CC emerge from their early-round games — which is by no means a sure thing given teams like Churchill, which beat Walter Johnson 2-1 in its first-round match, and Blair, which beat Kennedy 5-0, waiting to knock them off — they would play a rematch of the Barons’ exciting 2-1 victory earlier this season in regional semis. The north’s best, Quince Orchard, likely awaits the winner in the region finals, though the Cougars will have to get by a strong Gaithersburg side (7-3-2) first.

4A East Region:

#1 Seeds: Arundel (12-1-1), Broadneck (10-1-1)

Potential matchups to watch:

Leonardtown at Broadneck, region quarterfinals Tuesday, Oct. 29, 5pm

Broadneck vs. South River, region semifinals

Arundel vs. Broadneck, region finals

If the 4A West is the most technically talented part of the bracket, the 4A East will be the most physical and grueling. No. 1 seed Broadneck, runner up in Anne Arundel’s county championship Tuesday, should have its handful with SMAC force Leonardtown (9-2-1) who’ll they’ll see in Tuesday’s region quarterfinals. If they can get past the Raiders, who disposed of Annapolis 4-0 in the first round, Broadneck gets defending state champions South River (10-3) in the semifinals, a team knocked from its perch atop Anne Arundel this season and likely looking for revenge for the 3-2 loss the Bruins handed them early this season. If both Arundel and Broadneck can get that far, they’ll face off in a regional final matchup that would mark the teams’ third meeting in four weeks. Arundel won last week’s county championship, and the two tied during the regular season.

Maryland 3A

(2012 final: River Hill 1, C.M. Wright 0)

3A South Region:

#1 Seeds: Huntingtown (12-1-1), Westlake (7-7-0)

Potential matchups to watch:

●Huntingtown vs. Northern, region semifinal

SMAC teams populate the 3A South, and the No. 1 seed in the bottom half of the regional bracket, Westlake, finished in the middle of a tightly packed SMAC group in the regular season. The top half, therefore, will likely produce the region’s champion, and it will likely be either SMAC champ Huntingtown or Northern (8-2-1) , who pushed Huntingtown to one of its two one-goal wins in a season full of blowouts.

3A North Region:

#1 Seeds: Milford Mill (5-2-2 Baltimore County), C. Milton Wright (10-3-0 UCBAC Chesapeake)

Potential matchups to watch:

●Milford Mill vs. C. Milton Wright, region final

The 3A North is largely Baltimore-area teams, but features C. M. Wright, the team that River Hill beat in last year’s state championship. Whichever team emerges from the North will likely face Huntingtown for a berth in the final.

3A West Region:

#1 Seeds: Linganore (9-0-2), Damascus (14-0-0)

Potential matchups to watch:

●Linganore vs. Thomas Johnson, region semifinals

●Damascus vs. Thomas Johnson, region finals

Montgomery County’s breakout team, Damascus, is the squad to watch in the 3A West after an undefeated regular season that featured wins over B-CC and a 64-5 goal differential. If Damascus can make it through a lower half of the bracket that features five teams the Hornets played and beat by a combined score of 28-0 during the regular season, they could face Thomas Johnson in the regional final — the school that eliminated Damascus last year, and the school where Hornets’ Coach Katie Chapman played her high school soccer. Thomas Johnson squeaked by Tuscarora 1-0 in its first-round match, and will have its hands full with Urbana — last year’s West regional champion — in the quarters.

3A East Region:

#1 Seeds: Poly, River Hill (9-4-1)

Potential matchups to watch:

●Wilde Lake at River Hill, region quarterfinals, Tuesday, time TBD

●Atholton vs. River Hill, region semifinals

The 3A East features last year’s state champion River Hill. If the Hawks are to make it to the regional final — where they’ll face off with a Baltimore team — they may have to play Atholton(6-3-1) to get there, the only Howard County team to beat the Hawks in 2013. Don’t count out Wilde Lake (8-2-1) as an upset threat against the defending champs in their Tuesday quarterfinal. The Wildecats beat Atholton and Severna Park (11-3), another threat to emerge from bottom half of the East bracket.

Maryland 2A

(2012 final: Middletown 1, Fallston 0)

2A South:

#1 Seeds: Calvert (10-1-1), Gwynn Park (10-2-0)

Potential matchups to watch:

●Calvert vs. Marriotts Ridge, region semifinals

●Calvert vs. Gwynn Park, region finals

Prince George's County runner-up Gwynn Park leads a bottom half of the 2A South bracket made up entirely of county foes. Assuming the Yellow Jackets have no trouble with the teams from which they emerged in the regular season, they’ll be set up for a likely region final showdown with Calvert, the SMAC’s No. 2 team, in a game that should reveal a great deal about the relative quality of soccer in the two leagues.

2A North:

#1 Seeds: Western STES, Eastern Tech.

2A West:

#1 Seeds: Mountain Ridge, Century

2A East:

#1 Seeds: Harford Tech, Parkside

Maryland 1A

(2012 final: Manchester Valley 3, Brunswick 1)

1A South:

#1 Seeds: Sparrows Point (10-3), Surrattsville (8-3)

Potential Matchups to Watch

●Surrattsville vs. Central, region semifinal

●Surrattsville vs. Sparrow's Point, region final

The only region in 1A to feature area teams is the South, in which the bottom half of the bracket is made up of P.G. teams. Surrattsville should emerge, though they’ll have to get through Central — who will have to survive Forestville — to get there. If they reach the final, the Hornets will likely face off with Sparrows’ Point which lost in the Baltimore County championship this week.

1A North:

#1 Seeds: Havre de Grace, Manchester Valley

1A West:

#1 Seeds: Northern, Smithsburg

1A East:

#1 Seeds: Kent County, Snow Hill
