Stuck in a 1-1 game in extra innings against Fauquier on Thursday night in Purcellville,Woodgrove Coach Joe Spicer asked his players who wanted to hit the walkoff to send the Wolverines to the Virginia AA Region II title game.
Junior catcher Rachel Harris answered.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the 10th, Harris delivered a single to left field that scored Alayna Furr and clinched a spot in the state tournament for the defending state champions.
The Wolverines (23-2) will play Friday at Powhatan, which captured a 5-2 win over Front Royal school Skyline, to decide the region title.
“We told them a lot of times, if you’re going to have a chance to win it all, you’ve got to get through tough games like this,” Spicer said. “We were in a dogfight.”
Junior Jazmyn Rohrer went the distance, striking out 15.
Furr and fellow senior Mackenzie Moler both went 3 for 5.
